Latest UPDATE on neighbors dog (LONG POST)

For your safety I would report this whole thing right away. That way the police will know and can come right away if the dog owners cause any problems for you. I hope not, but better to be safe than sorry.

i am thinking if it was the kids dog and dad had disposed of one of his dogs before, that the dog is probably gone for good.. i can't imagine dad or son paying to fix it so i imagine they chose to put it down.. hopefully you won't ever see it again. i would definately report the incident incase the son retailiates in some way there is a record of what has happened.

What a sad sad situation. I'm SO sorry for you guys...

Go ahead. It didn't turn out to be a 911 situation, but it definitely still needs to be reported. Animal Control officers need to know about this dog too.

I would report it also - even if it has been a few days. It has been bothering you for the past couple days (the possiblity of some type of retaliation) and I think that at least you will know you did everything you could do. I would also keep these posts and write up a short accounting of everything that happened (dates included with everything that was said and done). Just in case they come back a year from now and it is no longer fresh in your mind, you will have all the facts laid out. Keep the summary with the pictures in a file for a few years.

More BAD news. So we found out the pit bull did die. Today it is really snowing here- which is odd here in Texas but its been snowing since 3AM. I figured my chickens were safe. Still after I took my DD to school I came back and put the hot wire across. I opened the coop to see if they wanted out. They wanted no part of it. It was cute. I took pictures. I left the door open in case they changed their minds.

Around 11am I heard a familiar sound- chicken screams. Ran out and two chickens were missing. All our chickens and roos were on the very top roost and just looking horrified. For a minute I was confused. I thought the two missing got pecked and flew out for a minute but they weren't anywhere. I looked around and found HUGE paw prints in the snow from the coop going back to the neighbors home. Then I saw the feathers and blood. I know at least one chicken must be dead. The other is MIA. Like i said its in the 30s and snowing. She has got to be in shock. I don't hold much hope for her. What was the most disturbing was that I was following the blood trail and I saw some shoe prints next to the paw prints that led to the back of our property and around to the neighbors property the long way. With it snowing I knew they were fresh and I have two dogs but neither of them have feet that big. I took pictures of everything I could. I went inside and called the police. I gave him my whole story including Tuesdays happenings. He said since the pit is dead I can't file charges against them on that, even with pictures. I don't get that. He said we didn't want to stir them up anymore since we killed their dog. I did not see the neighbors great dane (their other dog) but I have seen him in our yard before chasing chickens. He is HUGE. The owner of the pit is the only one home during the day.

I was pretty freaked out and told DH to come home from work. The officer said we could take them to civil court using the "51 % proof" law or whatever. If we can prove them mostly in the wrong, we will win. Aron talked to the pit owner and he said "you killed my dog over a chicken?!" Aron said they were our pets too, like his dog was. The guy was so upset he didnt' get to tell him his dog tried to attack him. I don't know what will happen there. At least the police have it on record now. I am supposed to talk to the officer again later because he was going to check his record, since I didn't have his last name earlier. I do now.

It is so sad. We have no layers now. Those dogs have killed 7 chickens (1 roo and 6 hens) in less than two months. My DD is going to be so upset. She was actually happy and relieved to find my DH had killed the other dog. Now she will be sad and scared all over again. if you can't leave your coop open when you are home/ with a hot wire on/ in the snow/ then when can you leave it open?

I feel so guilty.

Henry's whole flock is dead. (5 hens). The other hens we have are scared of him because he is huge and they are only 21 weeks old. I don't know what will happen now but I know this isn't the end and it isn't going away.
