Lavender Ameraucana Breeders .... UNITE

did you get them DIRECT from Smith? some people sell birds that may have come from breeders BUT that does not make them Smith birds.
Yes I did, along with some blacks. I have one small rooster that doesn't seem to be showing the gold, but he also doesn't have that "smooth" coloring of a lavender either...kind of uneven grayish... I don't know what to call that. He's the only one that I can see keeping, but his comb is not good. I thought maybe even with so-so color, the comb would be easier to correct.

Yes, I did get them directly from him.  I got blacks also.  I haven't talked to him about it yet.  They are from different pens with different toe punches.  I was wondering if anyone else had this issue and how hard it would be to correct.. or should I start over.

what is the toe punch? I will look agglomeration and see. they are in. grow out pen I have not looked at them much. I know I didn't see anything like that when I moved them. I still have my Shaffer roo and I am hatching from one pullet plus I have a few from my breeding pens.

worst case you could breed the birds not showing gold back to black. not really starting over. I would let him know what you have. let s know what he says...someone else may have the same issue. I know several people bought from him this year.

I don't know if I got a single decent pic :/ It was so windy and they were weirded out by my camera, LOL! But, just in case anyone can see anything I should know... Meet Isabeau and Navarre. I recently picked these two up from Paul Smith as "show quality adults". I am not certain on their ages, he just said "sexually mature". He said they were going through molt right now. Navarre is smaller than Isabeau and may be a little younger - I don't know. But there is no mating or egg laying going on yet. He crows a little but it sounds like he's still trying to find his voice. Sorry for a ton of pics - I just wasn't sure which if any were "good ones".

I have a lavender from Paul Smith's April 1 hatch. She looks about the same as yours. I'll try to get a picture of her and put it up.

When do young birds molt? They change their feathers a few times before they molt in the fall of their second year. Do they follow a pretty much standard schedule?

I honestly don't know really. I have feathers everywhere here right now so I would guess mine are all molting - yet those who are laying haven't slowed down a bit. I can't identify molting yet, LOL! I do know that there is a test you can do to each bird if they are molting where you look at their wing feathers and identify where they are in their molt based on which or how many feathers are shorter than the others. But I haven't tried it.

Flash, she is 20 weeks old. She's not laying yet, what is the average age for them to start laying? I love her eye color, is it the norm color for them?

One more of her, the pic make it look like she has yellow on her neck but it's just lighter lavender.

She has the correct eye color which is reddish bay. Generally my birds start to lay between 24 and 27 weeks. She might not lay though this year, the daylight is diminishing and unless you have her on lights she more than likely will start in the spring.

Glad to hear that the eyes are the right color, she was my very first chicken and I hatched her in my homemade incubator. I noticed she is smaller than my EE, BO and BA and they are 2 weeks younger. None of them are laying yet but living in FL I'm hoping with the warm weather I might get a few eggs this season!?!?:fl
