Lavender Ameraucana Breeders .... UNITE

Good luck kynewbchick!

Does anyone have any tips for sexing lavenders? My chicks will be 6 weeks old this weekend. I want to pull the girls out of there because I am creating a bachelor pen and mixing in a hatch of 10 week old boys.

All my lavenders are getting pink in their combs. There are only 4, and 3 look like boys by their stance, but the 4th I really don't know. Even the 3 boys, I am guessing. Maybe I will have a chance to take photos this weekend. Did I read that 3 rows of bumps in the comb confirms a boy?

Thanks for any advice!

Post some pictures Please.

Thanks. I will try to get out there for photos on Saturday. I hope it stops raining someday.

Try the tailfeather method.Pullets tails will be longer.

I am learning so much from all of you here. I plan to cull heavily as well, and made room in my main flock for any that didn't make the breeding cut but were still functional for layers and healthy otherwise. We've got the blueprints drawn up for the breeding coop and will be moving the existing coop/pasture sometime this weekend, hopefully, so that our setup is a bit more uniform (and not sitting directly on top of the septic tank and baskets - thanks for lying to us, property plat! LOL)

On another note, I noticed today when I went out to check on my little broody self-blue OEGB that she's setting a nest of 10 eggs - not the original 6 I thought she was on! I'm hoping to have people want these chicks, or else I'll be building yet another coop HAHAHA

Congrats on finalizing you and your sons dream! Am anxious to see his smiling face when actually sees those new eggs hatching!! Good luck and hugs to both of you!! Keep posting!

Hi, i am new on here and have just recently hatched 5 lav ameraucana's from 8 eggs - the 3 others hatched but all had weak legs (it was like their elbow as such couldn't support them and they just sort of shuffled around)they failed to last 2 days out of the egg. Do you think this is a genetic thing?? these were from 2 separate hatches, both batches had 4 lav ameraucana eggs (amongst others). Eggs were freshly supplied also. The other 5 chicks are strong healthy birds, never looked like having trouble, just wondering thoughts??

That's what I was thinking too - sounds like a vitamin deficiency in the parents.

Right, Thankyou heaps, will that deficiency have gone through to my chickens, ie, should i feed them something extra??? - it also happened to a silkie which i hatched also from same place.
