Lavender Ameraucana Breeders .... UNITE

Pics
I have read where people have used a couple of drops of PolyViSol infant vitamin drops in affected chicks' water...you might be able to run a search for that on this site and find the threads where people have used it and Vitamin E with success. I'm sorry I can't be of more help; I've not ever dealt with an issue like this before and I just happened to come across the thread after becoming a member.

Good luck! Keep us posted. :)

If I were to obtain a black roo from a bbs breeding, could he be used in lav breeding? As I understand, there is not much difference between a black chicken and a black bbs chicken? Am I missing a genetic link somewhere? The blue gene is a diluting gene correct? If not present then you get black? Of course with my luck, the bbs eggs I have will all turn out to be blue girls since I am hoping for a black boy :gig

If he is truly black there is NO difference between a black bird and one from the B/B/S breeding. B/B/S is Black/Blue/Splash - and true black carries no Blue gene. Blue is dominant - if it doesn't express it is not there.

HOWEVER - be warned that is is sometimes very difficult to tell a very dark blue bird from a black. The only way to know for sure is test breedings. If you test breed to a blue bird and you get splash - then its not Black.

IF the blacks are bred for their real purposes there should be a genetic difference form Pure Black and a black from a blue line breeding.

Oh, so I shouldn't use a black from a blue line breeding with a lav program? I received three bbs am eggs with eleven lav am eggs. Since I don't have a purpose for the bbs chicks, if they hatch, I am dreaming up uses. I can always find a home for females, but the boys present more of a problem. I know not to use a blue boy, but...back to the drawing board :gig

Please explain more about this. I find genetics fascinating and I want to learn all I can.

I haven't heard this put this way before - but I have heard that some of the birds from the B/B/S breedings are not as clean a Black as the Black from Black x Black. I read this in Silkies - and I believe its because the base for Black Silkies is not E, its probably E^R. However it can also be e^b with added unknown/un-named melanizers... I don't think this base problem is present in Ameraucanas, we don't see any wild-type looking chicks ending up looking pure black when grown.

I would like to know what other genetic differences there would be from a "Pure Black" breeding as opposed to a B/B/S breeding. What is lost or added when the Blue line is added?

Also, the Blacks that result from Split x Split crosses.. if tested and they are not splits (bred to lav and no lav chicks) are they closer genetically to the Pure Blacks?

I tried to get photos of my lavender chicks that I am sorting by sex. Maybe someone can tell me if I'm on the right path. They are now six weeks old.
First chick is the only one I got detailed photos of so far. I'm thinking this is a girl:

Back shot,
and detail of her comb below. It's pink, but not very big:

Here are two I'm thinking might be girls. One of these is the one in the photo above, I think the one on the ground.

Girl on left? Boy on right.:

Sorry the last photo is blurry. There are 4 lavender chicks total, but I only got 3 here. I think the 2 with their heads down are the girls, and the other is a boy:

I appreciate any feedback. This is my first time with lavender chicks and I am really not sure.
