Lavender Ameraucana Breeders .... UNITE

Pics
Little Wing,
Expect 1 out of ten to be of very good quality. After that depends on how many birds you are going to retain for the next year as to how far to cull. Rember there is Show quality and breeder quality. You should get about 25% breeder quality or better if you are lucky. Then there is egg color which you will have to wait and see what pullets produce the color you desire. So keep extra pullets that are nice because the best bird may not lay the best colored egg you will have to even these qualitites out to the best as you facility allows. Good luck you will enjoy them.
That is heavier culling than I had hoped for but I really don't have that much room. I'm going to try and mark the ones I think are culls and let them grow out just to see the differences. Once I learn that I'll be able to cull harder and earlier. Thanks for putting it into perspective for me.

Well those percentages are the ideal but you may get lucky and do better than that or you may hit the down side and not get that good of results.

THAT is why is stopped selling hatching eggs on here. People on here expect to get 100% all top show birds from a dozen of eggs. I wish it was that simple. They would be lucky to get 1 or 2 that should be kept for their next year stock. Some strains of birds you will get better percentage but that is from a flock that was proven and basically a closed flock for some time. Most of these birds are from a project color and has only been around since about 2005 and not since the 1980"s. That is why you keep going back to GOOD QUALITY BLACKS to improve type and feathering, it does not do much for the color as per what I have experienced, IMO.

If they all hatched out show quality then "show quality" wouldn't mean much.
I couldn't grasp why you needed to go back to blacks to get quality lavs but I think I get it now. Other breeds like lavender orpingtons were used to get the color and if you keep breeding lavender, traits of the orpingtons come out, so you go back to blacks because blacks have been around since the 80s and have been bred true and the lavs have only been around since 05. Am I close?

I have a trio of blacks coming from Donna tomorrow. They are from Citygirlinthecountry I think, right Donna? If so- her blacks were Cree line. I'll be making some splits with them and will definitely share eggs when they start back up.

great! that ticks that off my to do list!

i had a great black roo from Lamike, but a coon got it early in the spring. I hatched two sets of cuckoo pattern, but never got any blacks, so I'll be glad to get some when happy starts selling ;)

I purchased just a few lavender Ameraucanas this summer for the first time. I'm not sure if I have the time and energy to commit to breeding lavenders, but I do plan to hatch some this spring. In the event that I get caught up in the whole breeding experience, I'm wondering if this is a decent rooster. He grew really slowly, and he is now 6 months old, so I imagine he could still be growing. He does not have a big swooping tail, that I've seen in photos from other people. Could his tail still be growing? He just recently began to crow and show interest in mating.

I appreciate any feedback on him. They are very sweet birds.

His tail will get bigger. Looks really good, has some fretting which is really common. I would use him, but make sure to include some black and split hens.
It really helps that you have good pics like this- you will be able to see if your next generation (boys, especially) have the improved feather quality we're trying to get to.

The color needs some work. The tail feather appears to have a bird with the "K" factor so you need to breed him to your blacks first. The ABC goes into detail on breeding lavender and would be best to read some of the thread. Check out the last show Sedilla(?spelling may be off) and look at the tail on the bantam Lavender that is the tail without the "K" factor. Good luck and have some fun.
