Lavender Orpington project ....

Hi Dottie, so great to hear the babies settled in well. Wishing you much success with the eggs as well. I'm not sure about putting an incubator out in this heat. They usually require room temp to maintain stable temps. Best wishes for more peeps.

TsaLaGi - lavender dilutes black to a silvery gray color and buff to a lighter cream color. It is recessive so would take several generations to get there, but I'm sure they would be beautiful.

100% hatch..... I ended up with 11 Lavenders, 3 yellow (mottled), 2 with a big black spot mottled, 1 with a big Lavender spot mottled, and 1 calico looking chick (I assume it is a mottled), and 6 black (these blacks are Lavender over Light Sussex chicks).

Last weekend I got 8 Lavender, 2 yellow, 2 black mottled, and 11 Black (Lavender over Light Sussex). These eggs hatch out so nice and with no problems. Nice strong birds!

What a beautiful hatch!! Ok, I've got some questions....... ready?? lol
I figure that the lav', and mottled and blacks are out of the 'project lav' mixing is that correct? Or are ALL of these chicks from working on the lav' gene? The genetics and coloring just fascinates me and I so want to learn more!! I'm doing my best to find info and read read read... lol
Do the Orph's carry the self blue gene to start the project or is that something that you have to bring into their line? I LOVE the Orphs. they are just super sweet and such a majestic breed..super pretty and proud. And such sweet faces on them!!
How many generations of crossing do you have to do before they breed 'true' lav' or will they ever? I keep thinking 6 (?) is that correct?
The mottled, I figure they of course carry the lav' gene so had anyone done breedings with them to see what percent lav' would come out in the offspring?
Do they come out actually 'mottled' or is it more 'splash' like they talk about with the blue gene ??
Cathy are you selling any of your chicks? I'd love to get into more trouble and have some of these beauties. lol

Those are gorgeous chicks Kathy!

This mottling throwback came from some of the original crosses in the lavender project. We have since culled them out of our program and have not gotten any more in our recent breedings. You would not get a black mottled from a lav to lav breeding. These black mottled will start feathering in dalmation looking, but should finish almost completely black with some minute white feather tips. When you cross them to each other, they breed true. That is as far as I took them to confirm what they were. If the mottled carry the lav gene, it would act the same as regular lav. Once 2 copies are matched, you would get lav mottled.

You can have true lavender color in just a couple generations if correct selections are made. Although improving body conformation takes a bit longer. Typically you can get there in 5 generations for a simple color variety like this. More difficult colors may take much longer.

My lavenders are from an earlier generation. As Jody said above,

Been watching for some time. lol I've wanted lavs since they were first around.

Kathy I just love the lav. I am working on several color projects, and would love love love to be able to get a hold of a mottled lavender. Any chance you would sell a mottled lavender? And maybe even a regular lavender rooster?
