This mottling throwback came from some of the original crosses in the lavender project. We have since culled them out of our program and have not gotten any more in our recent breedings. You would not get a black mottled from a lav to lav breeding. These black mottled will start feathering in dalmation looking, but should finish almost completely black with some minute white feather tips. When you cross them to each other, they breed true. That is as far as I took them to confirm what they were. If the mottled carry the lav gene, it would act the same as regular lav. Once 2 copies are matched, you would get lav mottled.

I guess what I was trying to as is: Is the mottling visibly noticeable when they are older or do they look almost like a solid lav?

Henthymes, they grow up to look almost solid in color (black or lavender). You will see faint white tips on the lavender, but it doesn't stand out as much as it does on a black bird. You can tell the difference between a full grown lavender and a lavender mottled by the shank color. Pure lavender have slatey/bluish legs all the way down. Mottled lav have white shanks with some speckles of blue on them..but mostly white. I would imagine after the first moult, the mottling would be more pronounced in the plumage as it is typically. Prior to that they are hard to tell apart.

my orp project birds

there are lavs and bbs, they are 8 weeks old today. im so pleased they are doing well and i appear to have a decent ammount of girls. what do you think about sexes? i think i have 2 lav boys, 4 lav girls, 2 splash girls, and two blue. Not everyone has a clear photo, I can get better photos once the camera batteries charge, apparently the ones i was using (fresh from charger) dont work for the camera seeing as how i got 4 minutes of use from them before they died.

I'd keep an eye on that lav pullet in the back (with the four pictured). That could be a fast feathering cockerel. The wattles look a little too pink for a girl at this age. Great pics!

Kathy's got me hooked on Lavenders

I'll be getting pictures up of my strong little Lavender and the two...molted? ones today.


I'll see if I can snag the lil' black 'uns too, they're all strutting about outside with momma right now. No idea what they are
