Lavender Orpington project ....

I'll try again. I haven't been clear. I wondered if the above would also apply to blues.

Sorry, yes as long as they are of good quality and you do good culling.

Only if they were very, very good quality birds.

Edit to add: The hatching egg auction HappyMtn linked has pics of some of the nicest I've seen.

Ok, so if the blues are already typey then the black would help with the lacing, am I understanding this correctly? This is not the case with me as type does need work but I want to be sure I have this right. This is the last question about Blues I'll ask lol. I realize this is a lavender thread and will stop now.

Oh I thought you meant about crossing into lavenders. With blues, the best is blacks out of blues rather then other blacks, from my understanding.

You're right- breeding back to black is supposed to keep your blues better. Just like taking splash back to blue occasionally so they don't get that washed-out look. I almost wonder if the lack of definition in BBS could be considered over-dilution .

Thank you both! You both just taught me much more than I'd have learned from just a yes or no answer.

I bred my lav. Roo with two buff Orpington hens and two lav hens. I know that buff/lav mixes will come out black. But those two buff orphington hens have some of the best Orpington body I have seen in a long time when I went by the standards of perfection. The lav roo was very close just his back side was narrower than I would have liked but he was still a cockerel not a rooster I was hoping he would fill out more but alas he decided to chase a hen into some bushes obviously not paying attention and impaled himself on a branch through the eye ball. Idiot, I decided he did not make the selection of the fittest at least mentally. I did manage to get two dozen eggs from the girls before he committed harakiri

. The lav hens are ok.

Now for the questions what combinations of pure lavs and splits do you think I should keep? I was just going to breed them all back with the lav roo, which is now not possible what should I keep in the way of roosters and the hens and breed who with who?

Plus how long do you think these orph eggs will remain fertile with him now acting as fertilizer?
