but it doesn’t look very big yet so there might still be hope
Orpingtons can be hard to sex.?I think the look in its eye says cockerel. I may have ended up with 5 pullets, out of 5 eggs... so I'd love to trade.. I wanted a cockerel...

Lavender Orpingtons one one of the breeds we are considering. How do you like them? I've read that they have a calm temperament and would be good around kids.
I have no experience with chickens so this will be a new adventure for us. Also, about a year or so out so I am in the research phase.

Hi - so my 2 cents (I have 3 kids and have had chickens for 3 years now- we have about 60 right now.. LOL) if you can get several different breeds it is always fun to have each one a different colour, lay blue, green, cream, buff, dark brown, white, or olive eggs. I would get at least 6 or 7 (ideally 7-10) if you want to be able to stop buying eggs, give a dozen to a teacher, parent, mailman, friend etc.... Getting 4 the first year and 4 the second year would stretch out the good egg laying years. Easter Eggers have cute fluffy cheeks and beards, chickens have all sorts of combs, colours of legs etc... I would get 2 Easter Egger, 2 Olive egger, a Maran, 1 Welsummer, and maybe a crested cream leg bar... maybe a brown leghorn for a white egg.. You have all different bodies, colours and egg colour. What fun!
