So I went to my local farm and home store this evening and much to my surprise (because they NEVER have them) I saw lavender orpingtons in one of their bins priced at $4.99. They also had olive eggers and I believe sapphire gems (?).
Now I know this is a feed store with hatchery quality etc etc but my question is this: Is it worth the $5 to purchase some of the Orpington chicks?

Usually lavender Orpington’s are much more than that, even from the hatchery they are over $20 usually.

I bet they're somebody's local hatch and not from a hatchery. They're starting to get more popular so I bet the prices on them are going to start dropping soon, they are as common as table salt in my local chicken groups (and rightfully so, they are gorgeous!)

Buy them, but be prepared to be disappointed if they don't turn out to be as described.
Oh I'm all too familiar with the feed store chicks. My husband and I have ended up with some oopsies over the years :lau but they've all been wonderful chicks, chickens. All of our chicks have been from hatcheries or the feed store except our BCM. Sounds like I'll be traveling back to town :fl

Hopefully you wind up with some of these. :fl
