I am now officially confused. I thought lavender was a true breeding color, ie lav x lav = lav. What is a lav splash? I didn't think it was possible? It is just that I am now seeing the term more and more here and wanted to know what it was and if someone could explain it? thank you!

could it be like a splash , with lavender replacing where the blue would go?
aslo on a nother note since blue is a dilution of black , can lavender replace blue to?

lavender is self blue, it breeds true unlike a blue x blue which produces black, blue, and splash. lavender x lavender = lavender. Even if you breed a lavender to a splash(blue based) you get all blue that are split lavender. I was just wondering if I was missing something?

Blue and lavender are 2 different genes, but both work on black. Both can be present in the same bird, as they are independent and are not exclusive.

Blue is a dominant gene, and will turn black to blue with only one copy. Two copies of blue gives you splash.

A black bird is Bl/Bl. A blue is Bl/bl. A splash is bl/bl.

Lavender is a recessive gene, you need 2 copies to turn a black bird to lavender. One copy will give you a lavender split. You will see black but it will carry lavender. A pure lavender is based on black, BlBl lav/lav. A black split is Bl/Bl Lav/lav.

In your case of a splash x lavender you have bl/bl Lav/Lav x Bl/Bl lav/lav. All the resulting offspring will be Bl/bl Lav/lav, which will be blues split to lavender.

I'm sure someone else can explain it better (Sonoran or tadkerson).

klf, if you breed a lav to a splash, you will get black and blue carrying the lav gene. If you breed the split blues together, you will get some lav splash, regular splash, regular blues, split lav/blues, lavender, black and black/lav splits. IMO it can create quite a confusing breeding program, as identifying the birds can become difficult when you bring blue and splash into a lavender breeding.

Agreed. Only breed lavender to lavender or black, if you want to keep pure lavs.

Hey,
I have that same problem. I have a splash male, splash female, and two blue girls. I hacthed a baby with a splash head and a bluish white body. Im in the same boat "the confused"

Lavender splash specifies a combination of genes, much like lavender cuckoo or lavender partridge or lavender mottled.

Correction: Black (or more precisely, not-blue) is bl+/bl+; splash is Bl/Bl

Lavender splash would be a bird that is BOTH lavender and splash; appearance is going to look more like splash than like lavender. Genotype is lav/lav Bl/Bl.

Likewise, lavender blue looks more like a blue than like a lavender, and is lav/lav Bl/bl+

In either case, both parents must carry or be lavender; for splash, each parent must be blue or splash (e.g., neither can be black for splash offspring).

I was going to breed my Older Lav Roo to my Splash and blue hens, but was advised not to do that. So, now I have 3 hens that have no Roo

If I bred him to them and took the pullets from that breeding and bred back to him, and then took the pullets from that hatching, would they breed true?
