Lawnmower vs Rooster GRAPHIC PICS/ Saying Goodbye

Quote:
Kubota might know that if the hens see him in his gimpy state then they will all rush over to him concerned and clucking like, well mother hens over his wounds.
Or, think of the quarterback coming back to the sidelines during the game on crutches when everyone knew that the hit he took would put a lesser man down. The crowd cheers, the ladies swoon. He's everyones' darling. That's Kubota!

LOL
Thanks everyone... sorry for the slow update it has been a crazy day. Kubota is still hanging in there, he ate pretty well it looks like. I cleaned his leg and did just the ointment since I would be gone all day. Dawg is right, fire ants would eat the poor rooster alive. I will sugardine him early in the morning though and not put his ointment wraps on until late evening - I can do that Friday and Saturday... sugardine early Sunday and then it'll have to be ointment again for me to go back to work (this 'vacation' has been quite exhausting lol). You are right that he is expecting to be waited on hand and (1) foot - somehow he snookered me into hand feeding him last night by flashlight!! I guess he likes the mood lighting.

I thought I lost him this morning... I had him on my lap with his bad leg hanging off into a big coffee can of warm water and his head was drooped over my arm, but everytime I would talk he would open his eyes. I THINK he was dozing off, because when I took his leg out of the water he never closed his eyes again. He hops from one end of the kennel to hang out at the other, then back... but his good leg is looking pretty white... so tomorrow I will start working it some to make sure he keeps muscle and circulation.

Also, I will try to remembr in the morning to get a photo of his other foot... didn't I read somewhere here that a black circular scab on the bottom of their feet is bumble foot? Because if so, I am afraid he has another obstacle to overcome, and I don't know how much more either one of us can take.

Oh... I bought a jar of local honey today at the feed store -what's the consensus on honey vs sugardine?

Have you thought about putting him in a sling so he can rest the good leg?? There may be a pix in a chick care book if you have one.
I can imagine all these "great" ideas are just running you ragged!! You are doing a great thing for this chick!
As far as the honey, I am a beekeeper and know that honey is a perfect antibacterial. Bacteria can not grow in it. It just needs to be pure honey and raw is better than processed, of course. I do not know anything about the sugardine, so I can not say better or worse. I have used honey on my bird and on my own wounds and have had awesome healing times!
Maybe getting back to work will be less stressful than your "vacation". Hope things settle for you soon!

Do you know the feeling you get when you take a nice, hot, bath? Sometimes it seems like you could almost fall asleep, right there in the tub. That's because warm/hot water is a natural relaxant. I bet Kubota was just super relaxed and enjoying his warm soak!
Are you putting anything in the water? At the clinic, we often soak in dilute betadine (or povidine) solution. Make it look like weak tea if you decide to try it. Sounds like Kubota's got it made--you're doing an awesome job!

Edited to ad, I'd keep him on antibiotics for at least 14 days. If it was just a skin injury, 7 days would be fine, but you've got bone involvement.

Nothing much I can add to the other suggestions. Seems as if u have the leg coverered, the ants couldn't get to it. And chickens do eat ants. The honey sounds like a good idea but I would try it before u go back to work. Maybe use the ointment & honey?

Anyway I know going back to work will seem like a vacation to u. What does ur neighbor say about him? Blessings to u both.

Either I am losing my bandage wrapping skills or 'bota is moving around more - came home at 1030 to find him bandageless. So, with my ever-dimming flashlight I rewrapped him. I soaked his foot (hated to take it out of the water he was so quiet and content) and while his stump was soaking I massaged and manipulated his good leg some. I did add the last bit of povadine from one bottle to it. then I doused him good with povadine, opened my last tube of antibiotic and wrapped him up. Hopefully it will hold until morning.

Um... about the honey - I have no idea if it is raw or processed? It is local honey - very dark, no honeycomb.

ETA - geez I wish I could post just once without editing!!!! Anyway, Mr. B was out cutting the grass in his front lot today and asked about the rooster. I had the honey I just bought so I told him about it, he gave me a couple of bucks and said "Oh yeah!! We used honey all the time back on the farm! Can't beat it!" . Sometimes I wish I could sit with him and hear stories I know he must have....

I am so addicted to this post. I just HAVE to check a couple of times a day to see if there is anything new about Kubota.

I've had to soak chickens' feet/legs before and they fall asleep in a flash! I know I love soaking my feet when they're sore.

The sling idea might be worth a shot. I don't know how easy it would be with a rooster though. It could just make him mad

He is going to be one completely spoiled roo by time all is said and done! But how can you not?

You really are doing an amazing job. I've never had to deal with anything as serious as that (thank God) especially with someone else's roo, but I've had to do some serious enough one on one care. He will worship you!

They are so worth it, aren't they?
