One of my neighbors (who, mind you, just moved here from the city, and only lives here one day of the week) just complained about my rooster crowing. As far as I can see, there is no legal way for her to make me get rid of him, but I just wanted to make sure. Does anyone know if there are any laws or ordinances in New York that say that I can't keep a rooster?

Almost certainly not enough. Sorry, your individual property zoning matters. Your total acreage **may** matter. Whether you are in the City, the County, a recognized subdivision may matter, or a future land use zone **may** matter.

Sorry.

I'll link some of my prior efforts, so you can see the process and research for yourself. I just culled two birds, and need a shower. BADLY.

Apparently, I'm developing a reputation on these zoning questions??

but is Upstate NY good enough?
No.
You need to check with your local authorities....city, township, county ...which ever applies.
Even if you're allowed to have male chickens, noise ordinances may over ride anything.

Okay, well I'm in the country. This whole neighborhood actually used to be a farm, and there are farms all around us. The nearest town is about 10-15 minutes away (by car). There are other people around us, but the houses are not crazy close. It is not a recognized subdivision.

Do you know your zoning??? (SF-1, RR-3, RR-5, Ag-10, etc?) You can probably get it off the county tax assessor page. and what county are you in? With that info, and the assurance that you are not in any municipality or subdivision, it should be a quick search.

Our zoning is RA, and I'm in Ulster co.
