Maybe the heat is why they are choosing the floor?
Any way to reduce the heat in the nests?
Pics might help here, inside of coop and out.
I do have a fan on timer inside the coop to run during the day, the coop/run is also shaded mostly surrounded by trees and the garage since its built as a lean-to style. they get some direct sun late afternoon for a few hours then back to shade. They are mostly outside during the day and dig little divots to hunker down in throughout the run
There are pics of my build somewhere in the coop build section

Have you put a thermometer inside the coop, and maybe in the nests, to see if the fan is doing any good?

its only 1 or 2 of the 9.... Ive seen one nesting and yet to find the other. I plan to get rid of 3 more as I only want 6 so they would be the ones to get evicted first.
How many nests?
Good idea to reduce the numbers and et rid of any 'non-compliants' :gig

Thanks, I did photography for years, Id get my son to act all goofy with me and do stuff like this. When he was a baby I took him to a park, there was a tree stump low to the ground so I had to lay down to take the picture but put my son in the "Y" of that stump... My wife threw a fit that I stuck him in a tree for a photo op and didnt believe my story SO, one day we were at the same park and I showed her the stump LOL He is 14 now so he thinks he is too old to act goofy anymore.
So cute! How creative are you, lol! Yeah, they do grow up, the little stinkers.

Yeah but I rarely go into the coop is the issue, since I built it to access the eggs from outside the coop/run. Only time I go in is to fill the feed barrel and water drum. So, I need to eliminate that issue as some eggs get buried and find them walking in "crunch" and piles in the corners. Sometimes if I walk in Ive no clue about how long those eggs have been there so I chuck them into the woods. Found out last thanksgiving making deviled eggs some were rotten....
I see, yeah that makes sense.

No but it is definitely cooler inside , the fan on and large window open as well as the open space completely around the roof so it gets plenty of ventilation inside as well. There are 4 oversized nesting boxes. My only reason to reduce the flock to 6 is the amount of eggs we get. Originally had 16 hens, now have 9 and still too many eggs so 6 hens should be sufficient for us since no one seems to buy them anymore. I give a couple dozens to my neighbor and daughter every month and thats about it. My wife and son get on an egg kick occasionally but thats more in the winter months.
