I pick up six chicks of whatever breed is in the $1 bin at the farm store for meaties (or the biggest breed of pullets available). I integrate them with my laying flock at 6 weeks and then process at maybe 12-14 weeks. I can't have roosters so they have to go whenever they start crowing in any case. Rinse and repeat with new chicks coming into the brooder 2 weeks before the previous ones head to freezer camp.
They are tasty and provide enough for us (in addition to the culls from the new layers once a year) but definitely not grocery store size. Happy flock all year long.
