We feed an all-flock crumbles, but I ferment 2 parts Kalmbach's Henhouse Reserve to 1 part whole oats and 1 part whole red winter wheat. I add a small amt of chia and fennel. The grain we get from the Amish.

They get fermented once a day, but one could feed them that all the time. I don't as these are silkies that are prone to vitamin deficiencies, so I'd rather do both and cover 'em well.

Perris , so glad i looked and found you. I have been reading all your information avidly. Now determined to change.
Are you in the UK ? I live near Hereford and buy scottish oats from small scottish farmers, £42 for 25kgs organic inc postage. Happy to pay it but would like more local ( and cheaper). I still produce organic eggs for half what i used to buy them for.
During the summer i dry nettles, chickweed, hairy bittetcress, dock, small leaved lime leaves, grape vine leaves, chard/ cabbage and add to their feed during winter months. Will now add parsley and other herbs. So much information from you and others so i am confident that it will be succesful.

There is a good mill quite near to you, Castle Horse Feeds in Hay on Wye. They make the 80% wheat / 20% cut maize feed I started with; I don't know if they stock organic. Best to call in, phone or email them; their website is focussed on equine stuff. And if you like books, you can easily spend the whole day in the town!

We get the extremes of both cold and heat for a couple of weeks each. It's also very humid here. The rest of the time, it's bearable, and oftentimes even pleasant.
