OK, I have read that Bantam Cochins lay pretty well (I'll have to wait until mine get older to see for myself!), but what about the Standards? How do they compare?

If you check the henderson chart or the Mc Murray hatchery catalog, they will tell you, that LF Cochins are not the best layers.
However, I have 3 LF Cochin hens and last week I got 18 eggs from them and they are a little over a year old now. Laying machines........

I have one bantam cochin and 2 LF cochin who are laying (I hav bunch who are too little yet to lay). I get about 4-5 eggs per week from each hen. My LF are awesome layers. I can tell them from my other hens too, one lays an oval shaped pinkish egg and the other lays in a nest box no one else uses. They also give me eggs that are medium to large size. I love these girls and have added 6 new ones to the flock!

Ahh! Responses I was hoping for! Thanks, everyone. I kept reading in most places that they were poor layers, but I wanted to know y'all's experiences. I really love the Bantam Cochin chicks I just hatched, so as long as the Standard Cochins lay fairy well (since eggs are still a goal!), then I'll get me some. And, yes, they are so darn cute... those pantaloons get me every time....

I really love my standard cochins but they suck as far as egg production goes. I'm real lucky to get an egg every other day, then it seems like they all take turns going broody every week. I pretty much look at them as cordless incubators now.

That's why I'm keeping my Orps, Australorps & Sussex. I still have enough eggs to eat & sell a few, and I can throw the darn incubator in the closet for emergency use only! It's so funny when cochins have chicks and you can barely see the little baby feet peeking out under the fluff!
