Hi everyone,
Just curious, how old was your pullet when she started to lay? And what breed was she?
Thank you

My 2 hybrids (a Harco and Lohmann Brown) both started around the 19 week mark (one may have even not been quite that). My light Sussex was a couple of weeks later (maybe 21 weeks), this was in the spring with ever lightening skies. I have an Araucana that is 22 weeks tomorrow and her comb has really darkened up in recent weeks and I'm desperately hoping for an egg soon, however I've read that some wont' start until 28 weeks or longer particularly as in my situation with the nights drawing in very quickly! On another thread someone mentioned that they may not start laying until after the winter solstice and the light starts going the other way.
I'm guessing in Qld the light won't change much for you as you have such little difference between winter and summer so possibly more a breed thing, I'd imagine your RIRs will start a bit earlier than your other breeds. Have you notice colouring changes in thier combs / wattles? How old are they now?
A lot of my pullets begin at around 5-6months of age. My lohmans started at 18/19 weeks, about 22-24 for my Sussex and my frizzles and bantams were a lot later about 28+ weeks. It really just depends on the breed of chicken and whether they are under stress or are sick. Some of my speckled Sussex began laying tinish eggs but stopped because they got mereks disease soon after. If you purchase pullets they are point of lag sometimes they get stressed because they are in a new environment and their laying start could slightly delay.
Hope this helps![]()
