This just happened to our 5 month old Rhode Island Red, Little Red! We caught the prolapse early, isolated her, and kept her clean, but her body was in too much shock!

We were very upset because she was the family's favorite chicken. I feel your pain.
I have read that prolapse can be caused by an overweight hen, unhealthy hen, bad feeding plans, and too much artificial lighting. They can also be caused by premature laying (from the above causes) or just a fluke. I have been told not to worry about it, but it sure would stink to lose another hen!

It just stinks...no matter the reason

I'm sorry you lost your Little Red too...

CountryMama...I'd definitely recommend trying the buttons. I really enjoy mine and love watching them

Laying eggs isn't really good for any bird so I'd discourage laying so you don't lose anymore.

ways to disourage laying (not sure about quail but it works for other birds) is 9-10 hours of daylight a day, rearranging things in the cage on a daily basis, nothing that looks like a nest and no nesting materials (although I guess thats impossible for quail),and if it comes to a last resort, separating the females from the males.
