Hello everyone! We bought 16 additional chicks in July. About a month ago, a few of them started to lay. We have four that are consistently laying in the nesting boxes (we have 6). And we have two that CONSITENTLY lay at night. Every night! It's hard to figure out which two is doing it. That I'm not as concerned about as how can I make them stop? Thanks in advance?

Are you finding the eggs just beneath the roost? Are they normal appearing otherwise? I had a hen with "poor sphincter tone" and the act of jumping onto the roost released her egg prematurely into the shavings below. I called her "egg-continent" :P She would also just randomly lay an egg in the yard while she was walking around. I don't think there is anything you can do about it if her plumbing is faulty.

Yes, they are both laying right beneath where they are sleeping. I know it's gross, but if there's plenty of waste, the eggs are unharmed. But of course, if we've cleaned it out, the eggs are unsalvageable.

I have had this happen, and then just stop. I would wait two weeks before I would consider other ideas. If you know who it is, you could crate them at night. Or you could pile hay underneath them.

But really - I think this will stop on its own, it is just a glitch. Other than that, it is really only culling that will work. It is not a training issue.

It's been going on since they've started laying. So about a month. It's the same two egg-layers every night. I'm hoping that it will just stop on it's own. These chickens have been strange from the get-go. When we finally let them outside, they couldn't find their way back into the coop to roost. They all were huddled up on the ramp outside the door! lol

Wonders if they are low birds and intimidated away from the nests?

How many birds total?
