laying eggs in all the wrong places!

Use the hint from HopePeaceChickens which was to mark one of the eggs (for you to remember which it is) and put it in the nesting box
I get all my eggs when I do that. 5 from 5 hens

All girls laying in the boxes now, none in the "shed" nest since we started keeping them in till noonish or later. Have to add my lights come on at 6am and I usually open their coop door around 5:45, that's when Frankie climbs in and lays me an egg in the box before work :-) she's so sweet!

Thanks. that will work as long as it doesn't get too hot.. Now, if you tell me your chickens have AC, I just don't know what I might say next....

YES! We had a hot summer here in the 100's for weeks,they would pant and be so hot, so i rigged up carabeaners and hung ice blocks(cold air sinks right?so on the floor they didn't cool it down as much), it would actually lower the coop temp down 10 degrees or more for those few hours after dark, they'd still have a bit of ice in them in the am.....pie tins to catch condensation drips just had to empty in the am, and put the bottles back in the chest freezer for next night .....chickens loved them would fight over roost space next to the bottles and snuggle up close to them! Their panting would cease in 30 mins or less, yes I know way too spoiled!!!

Is this ever timely! It's supposed to get to the high 90's today in our area. DH put an automatic Attic Fan that kicks in around 80-ish.
This is a fantastic idea. You guys are awesome and I can tell you really care about your birds/animals and put good thought into their safety and situation.
 
HI, I am also in Northern Minnesota and since we are having such a nice winter sooo far, I have been waiting until there is light out so around 9 am. I have two coops and now I only have one chicken who has decided to lay her eggs in the coop and the rest have decided to lay their eggs under the coops. I have been wondering where they were laying, so I waited and watched one of them and then found lots of eggs waiting for me.

Because we get so cold up here, how long do you let your heat lamp go for during the day? Any info. for us up here would be great.

As always, I get some great ideas here! The hanging ice is brillant. only problem for me is that I do not have a chest freezer to freeze them in, but maybe I can get a small one. Want one anyway.

When my girls started laying in all the wrong places, I locked them up for a week and they all used their nest boxes. which they had all been doing prior to my letting them out all day in the first place. I also added shavings to the sand I had in there. Next I plan on closing in the fronts a little more.

However, I did find a nest in the barn. I am not sure how long it has been there, so will see if I find new eggs in there tomorrow.

I use the fake eggs in their nest boxes too, and mark them so I can easily tell them apart from the real ones, but I am going to get some more. Some nests have one, some two. The hens do not seem to know the difference between the fakes and real ones. My broody hen just turns them over as though they were real ones. I don't want to leave real ones in there as I am concerned that if they break, they will begin eating them. Fortunatley, I am usually home, so am able to collect often.
 
Our girls decided to start laying under their ramp to the chicken door and occaisionally under their outdoor roost instead of their nest boxes. So, after multiple tries of getting them to use the nest boxes, fake eggs, etc., we let them have their way and put a couple small sheets of plywood leaned against the coop walls with an opening on one end for them to lay in. All 17 girls lay behind their "privacy curtain" with an occasional rogue egg being found on the wrong side of their curtain but none outside or anywhere else anymore. Ours do not free range as we have a 20 x 40 enlosed and covered run for them.
