We're noticing odd behaviors lately: Someone is hurling her egg off the roost and it's smashing on the coop floor. Someone is laying outside (in or next to the run in the dirt) and someone is laying VERY odd shaped/soft shelled eggs (yes, they have oyster shell).
The girls (7) are just over a year old now and have been consistently good layers (they are brown RIR/Leghorn crossbreds). The coop is 6X8 with an attached 6X18 run. They are free to roam most of the day and usually follow us around as we do chores etc. Everyone seems healthy and happy - no molting signs yet. The only thing that has changed in their lives lately is their diet and the abundance of green pasture, worms and new bug hunting oportunities. We're wondering if this has anything to do with all of this egg laying drama - I notice that their pellet food doesn't get much attention now with all the other opportunities for "real" food...
Is anyone else having similiar "spring fever" issues???
PS - As I type this they are all sunning themselves on the deck and watching me through the patio doors...
