Well my laying hens aren't quite old enough to lay but I have a few questions. How long do the eggs last refrigerated after they are laid? Is there anything specific I need for laying hens? Is there anything I need to know about raising laying hens? Thanks!

For one thing laying hens need to be on layer feed and you can also put out a container with ground oyster shell which they will take free choice if they need more calcium.

If u wash the eggs u collect then they will last about 2-3 weeks in the refrigerator. If u don't wash them then they will last even longer

Welcome!

My Red Stars have just begun laying (I think 4 out of 24 are presently laying). I did not change their regular rations, but began putting out ground oyster shell for them (see Drumstick Diva's answer above).

My chickens free range, so I placed a ceramic egg in each nest box. I've heard of others using golf balls to the same end. Make sure they know where to lay.

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

You might want to stop by our learning center for more info on laying hens and how to care for them...

Properly refrigerated eggs can last a month and still be good eating. Enjoy your journeys and welcome to our flock!

I feed my chickens on a layer mix & give them crushed Oyster shell, if I were you, i'd look up on egg-related diseases such as egg-binding and egg eating.
