WOW! Thanks to all that has posted info you have no idea how this has eased my mind.
I'm new to call ducks as of July of this year and have read every post on BYC about them and learned a great deal.

But the person telling me to do all the switching feed really concerned me i have never heard that before.
I got my Calls from this site and visited the breeder and he showed me what he fed them so i followed his instructions.

Goose Dragon when should i feed the cat food and how often

If you are looking for ducklings in the spring NOW is not to early, you want them to be in prime condition when they start. usually the first few eggs are going to be not fertile, suggest you stick them a incubator for a week before you candle. I get the impression that you have 4 or five calls if so a moderate hand full every day would be about right. If your birds are fussy about feed Changes as many are you may have to offer only the cat food for a short period 2-3 days to get them used to it. Read the cat food label before buying you want it to contain meat or fish byproducts even poultry byproducts are better than all plant protein. Glad to be of help.

So a good mix would be half pellets half cat food?
Do i feed the cat food with the pellets year round or at certain times?

I have 11 Calls and they are separated into pairs in individual cages. My avatar is of my white hen with a baby that had just hatched

Oh thats what happens when you assume! I wouldn't go any higher than 1/4 cat food, it is formulated for cats and you don't want good teeth and a great fur coat LOL. You want to feed it going into the breeding season and thru the season you will find it pricy to feed year around but if probably wouldn't do any harm. Think of it as a breeding supplement not formulated for ducks, not a replacement feed.~gd

Country Acres Poultry Blend, a protein/vitamin/mineral supplement found at feed mills contains both animal and vegetable proteins. I can get this grower blend for $10 per 50 pounds.

As recommended by Country Acres, the feed formula is as follows:

Country Acres Poultry Blend 515 lbs
Ground Corn 1445 lbs
Calcium Carbonate 10 lbs
Dicalcium Phosphate 30 lbs

They also have another one for layers. It would be a lot cheaper than cat food.

Thank You Goose Dragon you have been a HUGE help to me

Do you have a Web Site?

I will start them on the cat food at 1/4 cat food to what i usually give them and use it as a supplement.
Is there anything else i should be doing to prepare them for the breeding season?

Yes it would be. I used to be able to get a Protein/vitamin/mineral FEED BASE locally but when the local poultry packing plant went out of business so did the feed store. If you are lucky enough to have a feed MILL be sure to ask about it! I would be willing to help anyone that wanted a custom ration blended and milled work out a formula based on cheap local grain ( I used to professionally formulate private label pet food for an National grocery chain that has now fallen on hard times and they have srunk back to a small east coast operation) The thing about Cat food is that it is available EVERYWHERE while these Feed Bases are usually only available where there are mills producing poultry feed. great ideal Le Canard but it won't work for everyone. BTW FEATHERED WINGS i DO NOT HAVE A WEB SITE, I waste too much time as it is posting on various waterfowl boards~gd

I hear ya...my red flags go up when I hear anyone recommend corn as almost a straight ration for feeding anything. No offense, but I've heard too many old-timey horse traders talk like that at breakfast and I know only too well what bedlam that stuff can wreak with horses when fed in large amounts or as a "whole" ration!

I rarely use corn or scratch or scratch grains i was told by a old timer who had been raising chickens 50 yrs when i first started with chickens as he said "Corn ain't good for nothin"

He told me i could use some in the winter if i wanted but corn was worthless as a feed i have stuck by that for 8 years now.
People will call me crazy but i can tell a chicken that eats alot of corn their poop smells sweet, At my house you can't smell my chickens and thats a good sign.
My ducks now thats another story
