Here, there, and everywhere
I know you're probably getting tired of me asking, but I really need to know. My 10 hens (2 years old) haven't laid eggs in 4 months. They suffered from mites, and we lost 3 chickens. So now, a few of the hens are getting red combs, some have pinkish combs, but my dominant hen has the palest of the combs. The hens with the red combs seem to be ready to lay, but they haven't. I was wondering if the dominant hen could be playing a role in their being no eggs, since she isn't ready to lay yet. Should I, as a precaution remove her from the flock for a while and see if that helps. Please any help will be appreciated.

Hens lay when hens lay but their diet, health, and other factors determine when that time has arrived. I don't know where on Earth you live but in the Northern Hemisphere and at this time of year, 4 months without an egg is an awfully long dry spell.

What kind of hen, how are they housed, and more importantly what are you feeding?

I live in the southeastern U.S.A. I have 3 Dominiques, 3 Black Sex Links, and 4 RIRs. I have them in a run, and at night they roost in a sheltered room, with plenty of ventilation. I feed them Fodder, Fermented Feed, and some Layer Feed, along with some fresh veggies, I've quit feeding them Bread, because there for a while I was afraid they were getting too fat. If my figuring is right, the fodder contains about 24 percent protein, and 5 percent calcium. If you have any ideas on the problem I would greatly appreciate it.
