These are my two mutts, Cindy and Bobbie (my first six were the "Bunch"). The woman I got them from said they were hatched in early December. I think they should start laying any day now. The one on the left was checking out the nesting boxes today, but neither of them "squat" when I go near them. Can any experts out there help me out?

Any idea what kind they are? I think they have some barred rock in them.

I'd agree I think they have some sort of barred rock in them. They're very beautiful hens. So then they are around 24 weeks old?

It's been awhile but I didn't think they absolutely had to show signs before laying, like squatting. When my girls started the one that squatted first was one of the last to start laying and the very first to lay (if my memory is correct) didn't squat at all, or at least not as much

Do you have fake eggs or golf balls in the nest boxes? They really look like they are at the laying age, nice red combs etc.

Yup, there are golf balls/ping pong balls in all of the boxes. The other one I got with these two, that hatched around the same time, has been laying for almost 3 weeks now:

When I posted her "baby" picture, folks thought she was a Sultan but her legs aren't feathered, so I'm still not sure what she might be. :-)
