I'm on Day 5 of having my chickens! :) I have a dozen eggs as of this morning!!! Is there a time they lay most; like mainly mornings, or will they lay throughout the day. Seems mostly mornings now that they're getting more comfortable.

Mine usually lay between about 9-10 and 1-3.

It can vary.

Do I need to keep the chickens in their coop so they stay near their nest boxes to lay their eggs or will they go back to them to lay their eggs. My 6 girls roam free during the daytime and are in their coop only at night. We are anxiously waiting for our first eggs. I expect it will be a few more weeks. The girls are 15 weeks.

.......and one of my old girls laid a thin shell off the roost onto the board this evening...found it about 9:30pm when I went to lock up.

I am one of those nuts that spends vacation time watching the chickens. A few years back I followed several hens for almost three weeks as they laid eggs into nests they ultimately began incubating. Time of day varied greatly, even for a given hen. Interval between eggs of a given hen was very important. Young hens in their prime produced eggs on intervals as short as 23 hours which caused each successive egg to be laid earlier in the day. When laying time would be during darkness, then a day was skipped to reset schedule. Some layed with longer intervals. Some even where erratice.

Thank you! You're not alone! I actually have a small stool I take out to sit on and sit with them :)
