I personally do not use light because my particular coop manufacturer did not recommend any lighting because of fire hazard therefore we do not. I hung a solar lantern outside my coop by window for decoration and light to help them up to coop. I really do not think it will add supplemental lighting sufficient to assist egg laying but I am more in the natural process. Some have added light safely and have not experienced any problem. One particular member this year confessed she had her coop burn down. It is rare that this would happen but possible. If do it is important to make sure you are following recommendations for structure and lighting codes so it does not become a fire hazard. In previous post with article they recommend red over white. If add light for daylight hours then some add a bulb that provides both heat and light for winter. TSC I know has a coop package that links to phone to add supplemental lighting, predator lighting, and heat bulb during the winter as a kit all in one but its 40-49$.
