Hello

We will be getting two call ducks as soon as I find the answer to this question!

They are 4 and 5 yrs old male and female.. ( a couple) the male has been my daughter but has lived at a friends house all this time.. now that we have the chicken we figured we would get the ducks too..

My question is- if we clip their wings will this affect their showablity at the county fair- and if so if we do it now and the fair is 11 weeks away will they have grew out enough to not count against her.. this is just for their safty till they get use to the new place...

other wise I will have to cover the run they will be in some how...

Thank you Donna B

I don't think you're allowed to show a bird with clipped wings. Disqualification. And I don't think 11 weeks is enough time to grow them back. I wouldn't try if you really want to show them. You might have to look into that.

I'm also looking into geting a pair of Calls, my first ones, and I'm planning to keep mine in a large dog crate for a few days and then turn them loose.

I've never clipped my calls wings. We have only had 2 out of about 90 that have ever flown over the 10 foot fence. Most of them just fly a couple feet off of the ground and come right back down.

Can they even fly? Are they not domestic? I have mallards I know they fly and yet I dont cut their wings...I have a crested and pekin both non-flyers.....My crested is so big around 12lbs she flaps but there leaves the ground..The pekin is alittle better but not much...My mallards are excellent flyers...

To answer the question can they even fly the answer is a big YES! I got them thinking okay they do not fly well we have a 5 ft fence where the chickens are and we put them in there.. in the morning no ducks.... looked and looked at 2 pm the girls call me they found them in the barn with the cows they caught the girl and the male got away and flew to another barn... so today they went and had a friend clip thier wings... if it does not pass at the fair in 11 weeks oh well it is for thier safty...

Oh yeah they fly! Mine aren't clipped; they are in an aviary. But we have such horrible wind that even if they didn't mean to fly over (if the net wasn't there) they would anyway. I've had the wind blow my geese out of the pasture!
