Leahy Famous Incubator

Very urban East Phoenix... but I own 8 acres in Utah that I'd love to retire to... I have 7 kids and I don't see it ever happening.

yeah i understand that. i lived in houston and austin for a few years but man the sprawl got to me. luckily the only thing in my nest are actual birds lol. no kids here except my birds, oh and my snake lol

Well on the note of inbreeding may I state this

When a person starts with a male and say 3-4 females
each female is a line
and genetically you can breed several lines with just those birds AND
not be inbred
One will use in first generation the original 5 birds
now hen #1 is a line
hen #2 is a line
hen #3 is a line and
hen #4 is a line

Using the F-1 offspring in 2nd season you do this
Use L#1 females on Line #2 males
Line #2 female on Line #3 males
Line #3 femakes on Line #4 males
and go thru all the lines to a different line
male and females
All these matings will produce offspring for the F-2 progeny
Each yr write down which females were bred to which line males

each then is not related fully. As you will NEED to keeep a book on lines and toe punch the off spring in each yrs hatching that will keep the lines going for yrs
I know of a person in South Carolina that never has added a new bird in 50 yrs using this
system of breeding

Here is the toe punch method of each line each yr

Toe punches explained

when you are talking about LI and LO and RI and RO you are thalking
about
the right and left foot and the webbing in the feet the inside would be
the
closest to the middle and outside would be the outside of the chicken?

Also what do you use to hole pucnh and does it hurt the
chickens? (a I use a toe punch which is held in your hand and web is insert in between top and bottom of toe punch. It makes a small sized hole as it is done on 2 day old chicks they don't flinch at its use. Make sure that it does cut thru so it will not grow shut

How big of a hole should one make so that it does not grow back and shound
you stick anything in the hole so it does not grow back? ( it is a hole a little smaller than a stick match hole. No it should not grow closed if it went thru the chick's web in foot. DO NOT stick any thing in the web hole it will be okay

here is my completed toe punch
USING TWO WEBS ON RIGHT FOOT
AND TWO WEBS ON LEFT FOOT

1. No Punch
2. LO = LEFT OUT SIDE
3. LO LI LEFT OUTSIDE AND LEFT INSIDE
4. LO RI LEFT OUTSIDE AND RIGHT INSIDE
5. LO RO LEFT OUTSIDE AND RIGHT OUT SIDE
6. LO RIO LEFT OUTSIDE AND RIGHT INSIDE AND RIGHT OUTSIDE
7. LI RI LEFT INSIDE AND RIGHT INSIDE
8. LI RO LEFT INSIDE AND RIGHT OUTSIDE
9. LI RIO LEFT INSIDE AND RIGHT INSIDE AND RIGHT OUT SIDE
10. RO RIGHT OUTSIDE
11. RO LIO RIGHT OUTSIDE AND LEFT INSIDE AND LEFT OUTSIDE
12 LI LEFT INSIDE
13. RI RIGHT INSIDE
14. RI LIO RIGHT INSIDE AND LEFT INSIDE AND LEFT OUT SIDE
15. RIO RIGHT INSIDE AND RIGHT OUT SIDE
16. RIO LIO RIGHT INSIDE AND RIGHT OUT SIDE AND LEFT INSIDE AND LEFT OUTSIDE

oh i did clean it up better than in the photos, it does have kind of a haze on it and im thinking of putting a new finish on it. i did use general purpose cleaner on it. i think it left a film on it. anyways it is working a little better. tell me how do you keep the temperature set on it.

Go ahead and buy two new wafers, start out fresh....then start fiddling with it...check the threaded rods, if they are bent (and they probably are) buy stainless steel rod to replace them.
Your incubator is a beauty....

thanks for the advice and the compliments on my beauty. i want to name it lol . nah but seriously thank you. i checked with the guy from texas peafowl. he sent me a nice reply and i also got to see his beautiful birds. i am really interested in the ocellated turkeys. thats the onlyplace i know of other than the zoos that have ocellated turkeys. my family went to mexico city when i was a kid on v acation and i remember going to the zoo. among the native animal exhibits was an ocellated turkey. so beautiful and i always wanted one but such a rare bird. those and the vulturine guineas. they look electric.
