Learned something new!

Funny you should bring that up. Wolves and dogs, in my opinion should not be a seperate "species". Are they evenly "technically" considered a seperate species, gotta look that up. Because, as you stated they can breed freely with very little problems.

Honestly, I don't know why Coyotes are even considered a different species. Because I believe wolves and coyotes can interbreed. The reason I say this is because there were issues with people reintroducing the Red Wolf to North Carolina because they were hybridizing with the Coyotes.

I need to check and make sure we're not missing a classification. LOL

wolves and coyotes can interbreed...the theory on their seperation is that wolves will usually kill coyotes and not breed them but they can.

Wolves and dogs are classified as seperate species

It is one of the things I make my Bio II class look up and ponder and write about...

I'm trying to remember the part two of the species definition. It describes the physical portion of seperation of species.

Something along the lines of "physical location and abilities that prevents breeding". I know, my memory is weak on details. Biology and animal science is my love.

most books give the defintion as two populations of animals that have "evolved" so that they are so different as to have a barrier to reproduction...genetic or landform

many frogs are labeled as seperate species because they breed at different times or levels in the tree canopy (this is true of many of the South American species)

there are groups of squirrles (I cant spell anymore or less than before which wasn't great then) seperated by the grand canyon...that is why they are seperate species

there is not a reason to split based on looks...that would be a subspecies split...otherwise..great danes and chiauahas would be seperate species

That's it. I was thinking about the "landform" and "physical barrier" part of the definition. I couldn't remember what "qualified" as a "physical barrier" again using the chihuahua and dane as an example.

But then to qualify, they'd have to qualify or disqualify for more than one part of the definition.

Can they produce fertile offspring? No.
Can they physically reproduce because of location or physical attributes? Yes.
Still seperate species. (lions and tigers) (physical yes, location, no)

Produce fertile offspring? Yes.
Physically reproduce based on location and physical attributes? No. Not without human interferance.
Would that be a seperate species?

Bah, just trying to talk it out.

Will have some of these. Planned to even before you posted it.

Plan on having Zedonk or Zorse. I acknowledge they may not be the most friendly/calm animals, but I'd have something just for the conversation and looks.

Plan on having Mule ducks.

"IF"(<--big if) I have cats, I want either Maine Coon or the Savannah cat hybrids.

(I'd probably just settle for the Serval by itself.

)

Never cared for Wolf Hybrids, preferred to have full wolves or full dogs. That way you know what to expect in behavior.

Oh and you have to have mini mules or Goliath mules for the hobby/exotic farm.

I tell hubby all the time, my "farm" will be more zoo like.
