Learning all I can about call ducks !

she is on day ten or eleven give or take a day

Candle anytime then... you know the difference between live good ones, quitters and bad ones, yes?

I can tell you know a lot!I was hoping you would find my thread lol. I've had some experience with owning caged birds like cockatiels but never ducks. I always wanted them and finally got them and was thinking oh no..I know nothing about caring for them!pretty much every Google search I tried brought me to this site so about everything I do know now is because of people like you!

If you had heard of me, you could have just PM'd me... many do, and I try to answer them all... emergencies get priority... :)

What are you feeding the ducklings? Giving them supplemental Niacin, Brewers yeast or Nutritional yeast? Just checking...

Just a bit spoiled
Lol
isn't it awesome! Raven is a huge wealth of knowledge too

Aww... still many that know way more than me...

yes they are a bit spoiled. They tell me off if I don't pick dandelion greens for them every day now. When I first got them they wouldn't come near me. They still don't love to be handled but they will eat from my hand and don't flip out anymore. And yes! People on byc are awesome!

Many never get comfortable being picked up, don't take that personal... earning their trust is HUGE though... and allowing them to come to you, great work... :)

I believe I know what I'm looking for when candling I've watched tons of you tube videos! As for feed I started them with a game bird show bird starter feed and have now swiched it to an all flock crumble feed that's for ducks. I haven't given any supplements cause I thought I only had to give that if using chic starter for chickens? Oh..and I would have sent you a message but I didn't join till like a week ago. I don't know why I didn't join sooner!

Purina Flock Raiser?
its not Purina but same as I think. Its orchalin brand I can get at the closest feed store we have. We have a MFA in town but they only carry 50lb bags of chicken scratch or egg pellets. The adults were being fed the egg pellets all their life and don't wanna eat anything else. Wondering if eating that year round could have anything to do with the eggs being too hard for the ducklings to break out of. So do you think I need to give them the brewers yeast and niacin ? I take them outside and let them forage also. They love worms!

Just check the ingredients tag... Niacin shouldn't be too far down is all... as long as they don't start having leg issues, they should be fine...

No, Call eggs should have hard shells... they have issues pipping due to 2 reasons, short bills and the bigger part is a shorter neck... shorter neck can hinder their ability to reach far enough to external pip...

Finally had some warm weather today, got out and candled Jane's eggs tonight and all 12 look healthy and little babies moving around inside! And to sweeten the deal my little six yr. old nephew was here and got to see them and was able to make out a little beak opening and closing inside! So cool to share that experience with him! He had a great time with the ducklings today too. He even got brave enough to let them eat a worm out of his hand. So proud of him he typically is not a play in the mud kind of boy and doesn't like worms and bugs and such, he has always been a bit fearful of any kind animals really. But by the end of the day he was sitting on the grass letting the ducklings nibble all over him and having a great time!
