I read something saying chickens can learn each others names, and I was wondering, is there a way to test whether they know each others name? Does anyone have any ideas?

They can learn an amazing amount of human words and hand signals if you spend time with them, but there's not much literature I know about that describes how to train or test name recognition, particularly between chickens.

It's almost certain they recognize much more of our verbal and body language than we realize, but they don't have a good reason to demonstrate they recognize it. Just like we have basic recognition of their language, their clucks and bakaws and growls, to mean specific things, but we don't respond the way another chicken would respond to their noises, so they probably don't think we understand them. If they think about those things.

If that makes sense.

As far as figuring out how chickens interact with human communication, Click with Your Chick is a cool book. Easy to read and really fun to experiment with.

They surely know each others’ names in chicken language. My old hen Speck knows her name and comes when I call her.
