Chapter 12
New sister.
Lea raced to the forest. She worried the wolves had followed them to the valley, determined to hunt and kill the horses in FeatherHerd. Dodging trees, Lea found her mother laying under a tree, gasping for air. "Lea, .... Get ..... Rani ......" Feather stopped, her eyes widened. "Get.......Rani......." Lea nodded, then raced to the herd. "Rani! Rani come quick!" Rani's head came up from where she was grazing. Never one to get excited, Rani looked calmly at Lea. "What's the matter dear?" "Feather. Laying down. White bag..." Lea gasped. "I know what's going on." Rani said. "Come show me where your mother is." Lea nodded, then cantered towards her mother. Hold on Feather! She thought. I'm coming with Rani.
When they arrived, Feather laid there, gasping for air. Powerful waves swept over her body. Every time a wave passed, Feather gasped, pain gripping her. Rani set to work. "Lea! Stand by your mother's head. Don't let her turn towards me. Feather, I want you to push as hard as you can every time you feel a wave." Barely there, Feather nodded, gritted her teeth, and pushed. "Feather, you'll be ok. You can't leave me. I need you. Just do what Rani says and you'll be ok." Lea whispered. One last huge wave swept over Feather after another. Feather grunted, pushed, and then the waves got smaller. Lea heard a faint ripping noise. "You can come back here now, Lea!" Rani said. "You have a new baby sister." Lea was shocked. A sister? She thought. It can't be! Lea went back to see her new sister. The small filly was blue-gray in color and looked just like Feather.
"Feather?"
Silence.
"Yes Lea?"
"What are you gonna name her?"
"How about you pick a name for her."
"Let's name her Bluebell, 'cause she's almost blue."
"Ok, dear. Her name is Bluebell. Now go tell King about his new daughter."
"Yes Feather."
