For about 3 years I had a small flock of golden comets (5-7 hens) with a banty rooster, then later a big Rhode Island Red rooster who kept his harem safe when I let them roam our nearly 1 acre in Albuquerque. I loved watching the girls; we called it “chicken TV” because it was so entertaining.
Since then I moved to the Pacific Northwest and had to rehome the flock to a neighbor who was happy to add to his own menagerie of ducks, chickens, and goats. I am hoping to add a small (3-4) flock to my city lot, but that will take more planning plus building a small coop that takes into account the wetter weather!
I am a newly retired teacher, and besides riding my bike around the neighborhood, I enjoy woodworking, gardening, and playing with my rescue pup. I am looking forward to reading about others’ experiences raising chickens, and especially those who also live in the PNW, which is much, much wetter than the high desert climate of the ‘Burque.
