Chapter 18
Learning to Live Again

One week later.

I took a deep breath of clean air. Talon and I had gotten the camp cleaned out and moved the herd back in. Once the herd was out in some fresh air, their wounds began to heal and the sickness was gone. We all had eaten and gained some weight, so we were looking like horses again. My only worry was my mother. She was still very sad and quiet. She just put herself through the motions of eating and sleeping, rarely ever talking. I tried to help her, but the only one she seemed to respond to was Talon. He was the only one who could get her to talk, even if she only said one word, it was always for him.

I heard a noise in the bushes behind me. Whipping around, I saw two amber eyes looking into my own brown eyes. "Talon," I said, taking deep breaths and trying not to panic. " there is something in that bush. Get the herd out of here and I'll take care of it." Just then, the thing in the bush jumped out at me! I was ready, and I turned tail to it and kicked out as hard as I could, sending the animal sprawling into the bushes. I walked over carefully, and saw that it was knocked out. That is one ugly animal. I thought to myself. Thank the stars there's just one! It started to move a little, so I stepped back behind the bushes. It got up and started walking away from me. Quietly, I started to follow it.

Chapter 19
Attack

As I followed the animal, which I guess was what Rani called puma, I saw that it was heading for a cave in the mountainside. It walked in, leaving me outside alone with my thoughts. Well, I guess we have to attack the whole pack of them. I sighed and started walking back towards camp to find Talon.

Back at camp, Talon and I started making a plan to attack the puma. "If we attack here and chase them here..." Talon started, taking a stick in his mouth and drawing what looked like a lake. "....Then we have a good lot of room to fight." I said. "But what if they went like this," I took the stick in my mouth and drew a line. "We could block the entrance and then they can't go back to hide in there!" "Good idea, Lea!" Talon cheered. "I'll go get some horses and we'll attack at moon-high tonight!"

Moon-high

I led the herd to the cave entrance, and then told them to wait for me. I ducked inside of the puma cave and wrinkled my nose.Woo whee! What a stench! I thought and then, the first of the puma saw me coming. He took off towards the back of the cave and growled for backup. That was my Que. I started to back out and made it, right before the puma came out my herd took off and then split like they had been told. Once the cave was blocked off my angry horses, the puma cowered, as my herd started in on them.

I'll spare you the gory details, so let's just say those were some beat up puma, and they took off for the hills, covered with bruises and cuts from the attack.

I started home, herd following, just as dawn broke over the hills.
