The $3 as the buy it now price is the daily cost if you do the "Our Farm Lease" options. Read on to find out more.

Have you ever thought about owning an alpaca but 1) didn’t know if alpacas were the right livestock for you or 2) you didn’t have the property to own the alpacas. With the Silk Creek Farm Alpaca Lease program you can find out if alpacas are the right livestock for you. You can own an alpaca for a fraction of the cost of a small herd of alpacas, and you can slowly ease your way in to becoming an alpaca breeder.

We have two lease programs available to our clients.

Alpaca Lease #1 – Our Farm Lease

Who is this lease for?
This lease is for individuals who do not currently own property for alpacas but would like to own alpacas.

How does the lease work?
This lease is for the term of the alpacas pregnancy. The alpaca is boarded at Silk Creek Farm for the duration of the lease. At the end of the lease you will own the cria from the alpaca that you leased. You will then have the opportunity to decide if you would like to continue the lease on the alpaca, purchase the alpaca (all payments made towards the lease will count towards the purchase price), start a lease on another alpaca or discontinue leasing. No matter your choice, you still own the cria from your lease.

How much does the lease cost?
$3.00 per day for alpaca board. Boarding includes, hay, alpaca feed, basic health needs (toenail trimming, worming when needed, and other regular needs).

$75 for Ultrasounds to confirm pregnancy. This can be done a second time to reconfirm pregnancy. This will be completed by our veterinarian.

Breeding fee – If you wish to use one of our herdsires the breeding fee will be reduced to $500 ($250 off regular stud fee). We can also work with you to find a herdsire in the area and we’ll work with that farm on anything that needs to be done. You will pay the breeding fee and any other fees to that farm, we will just work out the logistics. There may be a small transportation fee as well. Any vet fees accrued due to transportation or breeding will also be paid by you.

Shearing fee – you will pay the actual cost of shearing for your alpaca. We do not mark-up the shearing fee. We would love for you to come help us out on shearing day. We shear between late April and early June. Shearing will cost between $25 – $50.

Veterinarian fees – If there are any medical issues along the way you will need to cover these costs.

Birthing Fees – You will need to pay for any fees associated with the birthing of your cria. This will include all veterinarian fees, lab fees and any other fees associated with the birth.

Once the cria is born, boarding will be the same as the mother at $3.00 per day.

What is the length of the lease?
The lease will be from the time we sign the contract until 30 days after the cria is born. So if you sign the lease in July of 2010 and the cria is born August 2011 the lease will end in September of 2011.

When am I able to start the lease?
Our Farm Leases are available year round on open females (then you get to choose the sire) and from June – November on bred females.

What alpacas are available for this lease?
All open or bred female alpacas are available for this lease once they are 18 months or older.

What are the risks?
As with all livestock purchases you assume some risk. You do not know what color the cria will be (there is no way to know beforehand even knowing the dam and sire’s colors). You do not know what the sex will be (technically 50% of cria are females & 50% are male). You don’t know how fine the fiber will be or if the cria will be healthy or even survive. You assume the risk and there is no guarantee that all will turn out how you want it, but it might.
