I have a lemon cuckoo Orpington who is broody and sat on around 12 eggs. she is in her own coop with a pekin bantam rooster. they get on well. my question is, should i let her hatch the chicks and keep him in with her or should i remove him? it would mean he would be on his own.
i normally separate my broodies from the rest of the flock but in this case there is no flock just her and my rooster.
any advice would be greatly appreciated.

just to add that i plan on keeping all or at least most of the chicks she hatches out so that they can have a better sized group. so i need the rooster to accept the chicks

I have left hens in with my flock while sitting and the chicks have been fine. Actually more easily accepted BUT I also have an exceptionally friendly flock and don't have any really nasty or aggressive birds. I think this kind of thing has to be done on a case by case basis, that the birds temperaments must be taken into account, and also you have to decide what your comfortable with. How are you going to feel of something does happen?
Maybe put a small cage around her so there is a barrier between him and the chicks at first and assess from there?

the rooster is lovely but my hen is nice but stands her ground. i tried to put her in my main laying flock but she was such a bully i had to remove her. i have no doubt she will protect them. but i know i will be devastated if he attacks the chicks.
i was thinking of keeping him in a separate bit so he can see them for 3-4 days and then allowing him to go in with her once she has bonded with them and willing to protect them.
they are currently living in a large dog kennel with run attached so there is enough space for him to have a separate area for a few days.
i'm just unsure if that will work or not

The hen, once she hatches her babies, will be very protective of them. Since she and the bantam rooster are buddies, it will probably be fine, but you could start by keeping them in their usual area but put up netting in between, just until you make sure everybody gets along.
