I always use leaves and I use pine needles, never a prob and they love scratching around in it. I advertise on craigslist and pick up plenty of dry clean leaves and needles and store them thru the winter, when I open a new bag they go crazy for it. The needles work great in nest boxes, composts faster than straw or shavings.
