I have a Pavlovskaya hen hatching a small clutch all viable 2 already hatch 3 more to go. My question is should I leave the chicks to be raised with their mother or put them in my brooder. We free range on pasture and I am not sure how that would work with lil chicks if I make small pen with a nesting box and chick food/water in the barn area will the mom still care for them will they freeze. I ultimately would like to leave them with the flock but dont know how to make that work. P.S my rooster is a sissy and doesnt protect any of the flock.

If she is a good mother, separate her with her chicks in a small pen with food, water and shelter until the chicks are feathering well and able to get around. If the other birds are not aggressive, you should be able to integrate them with their mother back in the flock in a few weeks.

Let mama try. She should stay with them around the coop until they’re ready to venture out. But keep an eye on her. If she abandons them, you might have to get them to a brooder.
