leaving the nest

I am a new proud owner of three 3 week old mallards. I was told I could let them fly away for the winter and they would return in the fall. I am wondering if this is ok...will they be able to fend for themselves ?

If they are from a domestic line, they probably wont do well. If you have wild ones on your hand, the chances are better.

If they did fly away, how are they going to know where to go?
(Seriously. Is it all instinctive or do they learn this from the older ducks?)

They are domestic. I think it would be very difficult for me to see them go anyway ! Thanks !
