Leg band applicator help

So I need to get metal seamless bands for my mallards as state law. The leg bands itself are cheap but the applicator itself costs 40 dollars! I only have eight birds it seems a bit excessive. So do I need the special applicator or can I use an regular pair of pliers?

Lol no they will fall off of not clamped that's is with the metal ones. They do have adjustable ones but I have to have mine so they cannot come off once on.

The ones I use do exactly that. I band with ABA bands. They go on when the birds are just big enough the band will slip over their foot, but not easily fall off. From there, the birds grow and the bands stay on and cannot come off without being cut off.

Probably not something that would count for the state law the OP is talking about, though.
