Leg bands???

Agreed, a bird will not leave my property with a band on.

I agree with the above poster. Wing bands are much safer. Zip ties may tighten in their own, eventually causing lameness and can cut off the leg circulation. Leg bands must be checked often because they can ride up on the leg and cause extreme pain and lameness and often it is noticed too late.

Abrianna, Have you had any of these unfortunate experiences happen to you, in your flock?

If you use zip ties you'll have to change them out often. As chicks grow quickly and the zip ties will get to tight. I personally use elastic chick bands the will stretch with the chicks growth and only have to be changed maybe once as they are growing. And the can be reused when the chicks out grow them.

They are nice but not big enough for chickens, only pigeons or quail.

I was thinking of maybe Velcro fastened ribbons. Or, how about colored pipe-cleaners? In any case, wouldn’t the other chickens peck at a colorful band?

They will peck at any type of band on their legs. I'm sure its uncomfortable until they get use to it. That's why they have to be strong and secure. Pipe-cleaners could work with a couple good twists. They may get them off in time but maybe not.

My husband and I used pipe cleaners. Not so good. They’ve worked the twists a bit and wire is poky. I think we will switch to colored Velcro strips suggested from Walmart.
