Leg bands

I was at the feed store today browsing and came across these "leg bands". Do they have purpose or what are they?

They are usually for identification, so you can tell your birds apart, some health programs require tested birds to be id etc. There are quite a few different things people use for more or less permanent id, this website has a bunch or wing and leg band examples, you can also use things like zip ties http://www.nationalband.com/nbtpoult.htm
