Hey Ya'll! I just found one of my chickens with a bloody and broken leg. She was stepped on by a horse that was a little eager for her hay. I cleaned it up, wrapped it and splinted it. I then made a makeshift sling for her that support her leg, with access to food and water. Is there anything else I can do for her before taking her to the vet? I can't afford to take her to the vet and I want to save putting her down as a last option. Anything would help! She is about three years old, and she is a Light Brahma.
Thank you!

Unfortunately I really have to agree putting her down will be your kindest option. There is likely a lot more damage to her leg than just the bone, and IF she ever recovered she would be at risk of anything & everything, if she could even walk. We had a really simple case of a broken toe months ago that led to the chicken needing to be put down. Despite our best efforts, it didn't heal properly, and she couldn't keep up with everyone. I'm sorry!

You said bloody so is that from the bone or the flesh injury of the horse? I ask because if the bone was sticking out, it will no doubt get infected so she'd need to be on antibiotics.

I would use Neosporin (without painkiller) or something like that on any exposed areas and where possible. I'd also get her eating her feed and some scrambled eggs, and also get Poultry Cell or Nutra-Drench in her water for vitamin support while she heals.

It sounds like you have already cared for the leg by splinting it. She'll probably never be able to walk on it though. If you want to give her the chance, can you get antibiotics for her? I'd get amoxicillin from jedds.com if you don't have any way to get some.

What bone in the leg was fractured? Do you have antibiotics such as clindamycin or cephalexin? Pictures of her and the splint and sling may be helpful. Lower leg or foot fractures may heal, but upper leg fractures are more difficult. A compound fracture through the skin can be a setup for bone infection. Was it crushed? Using Betadine or chlorhexidene to disinfect the skin wound may help. It doesn’t hurt to try to save her, but if she seems to be suffering, putting her down might be kind.

I'll probably put her down. I just need to know how to make her more comfortable while I don't have time to deal with her. Thanks for the ideas guys :love

I have Roo who broke his leg. I kept it cleaned and sprayed. The leg eventually turned black. Then feel off. Sad I know. He has been fine and it's been 5 months or so. He is separated from the others. I and now looking for a prosthetic leg. He is 7. And I Don't like just putting a bird down.
