Leg cramps OUCH!!

Take extra vit C to boost immunity if your a smoker. My doc told me that. Plus I heard that extra C and D helps other vitamins absorb. Also cholesterol lowering drugs can cause leg cramps, which is a sign of a serious allergic reaction and needs to be reported to the doctor.

Yes you need Vit C to help absorb the Iron....

My grandmother told me when I was pregnant and got cramps in my legs to put CORKS in the bed

(so you have to drink the wine FIRST and the corks work !) Seriously they worked for me, but it might have been all in my head

Severe legs cramps here, potasium was of little help. But I have two bad disks and get sciatia regularly. The only thing that has helped was magnesium and upping my calcium level. Great information from a nurse.

PT manager also told me to try the old fashion Doan's back pills. I laughed....greatest thing yet for the leg cramps! They are a type of aspirin made with magnesium. I take one before bed if I have done a little too much work around the farm that day.

Not so much cramps as pain, buggy legs, tight calf muscles, etc. from RLS I'm in the process of getting a doctor diagnosis but, I'm going to try some of these suggestions.

We've always used tonic water. Apparently the quinine in it helps the cramps.

Plus, I have also found that TOO much calcium can make my fibro act up and cause cramping pain.

my dh has leg cramps so bad he will pass out we found that if i put real hot wet towels on his leg at the cramp as soon as they start helps alot we use 2 hand towels and rotate them before they have time to cool down hope this helps

Seabright is right on the money. The majority of the population is magnesium deficient and increasing the calcium supplementation just worsens the problem. Since so many women take calcium pills, told to drink milk--it's no wonder that the majority of fibromyalgia sufferers are women.
The importance of magnesium cannot be stressed enough. It acts as a natural calcium channel blocker and un-knots those muscle cramps and calms heart palpitations. It assists the first enzyme involved in glycolysis (the breakdown of glucose)--diabetics need more magnesium. Depressed people and those with anxiety are magnesium deficient.

Why are so many people deficient in the first place? Eating sugar, white flour and processed foods is the biggest reason.

The best form of magnesium is magnesium taurate; the aspartate and glutamate forms are the worst because glutamate and aspartate are neurotoxic. Magnesium oxide is cheap but worthless unless you need a laxative. To bypass the laxative effect, magnesium oil is applied to the skin. It isn't a true oil, but it feels oily because of its high concentration of magnesium chloride. This transdermal method will raise the body's magnesium levels much more quickly than oral supplementation.

The quinine in tonic water has helped some people. I've read of many testimonials in favor of the soap-under-the-bedsheet approach.
Another good source of potassium is Morton's Salt Substitute, which is nearly pure potassium chloride. Just don't consume it straight!

Sorry this post is so long, got a little carried away.

I've made it sort of a personal mission to inform family & friends on the importance of magnesium.

What's bad is that I know this about magnesium - and suffer from depression, fibro and migraines and know I should take more - but I forget about it after a few days.
