So this means Vaseline won't help!! Wonderfreakingful!!! She had feathers on her feet so I can't get a good pic of her standing.I believe that is something else. Don't blow your top, it won't help.
Can you post a pic of the bird standing? It looks like an injury to me... but I also am here to learn.
Scaly leg mite should look like lifted scales with keratin growth coming out from underneath.
Hope he recovers quickly... and so do you!![]()

I soaked her in Epsom salt earlier. I'll be putting vaseline on her in a little bit. I'm thinking about putting her in the brooder for a couple of days until this starts to look better. To me that looks like it was a really bad case of scaly leg mites which resulted in the complete loss of scales on the foot. The brown/rust part looks like an injury of some kind, possibly due to tender skin exposed by the loss of scales. I would soak for 20 minutes in epsom salts and VERY gently clean the foot to remove gunk but not do any further damage to tissue and then see what it looks like cleaned up. I'd go ahead and treat for SLM, but it can take months for scales to grow back. Depending on the injury I might wrap that foot to keep it clean while the injury heals. Another possibility would be something fungal.
Here is an image I found of a similar SLM foot with loss of scales:View attachment 1387058
Ah.. I was wondering why I couldn't see scales. That makes sense.which resulted in the complete loss of scales on the foot.
Thank you! I have her in the brooder with her friend that I bought along with her. It has a dirt floor. I'm going to get some bedding but the stores that carry it are all closed for the night. So I'll be going straight to town after work and getting some.Ah.. I was wondering why I couldn't see scales. That makes sense.
I too would still treat for SLM.
Use the vaseline. Suffocation should work. But one last option (if needed), pour on Ivermectin works for scaly leg mite. It isn't labeled for use in chickens and would be my last resort. Good luck.
