How do you tell when you've gotten rid of leg mites without watching them all the time to see if they peck at their feet? Do the scales go back down and look more normal, or do they stay raised?

In juveniles the scales will return to normal. In aged birds(old roosters) they may stay raised the rest of their life. Treatment is inexpensive( motor oil/cooking oil) so treat repeatedly(say 30 days) and they will normalize faster. FWIW,regards Marcel

In 2 of my books on chickens they say to use 1 part kerosene and 3 parts mineral iol. Be sure to get it up under the scales with a q tip or something. Maybe even a paint brush.

Thanks everyone! If the scales don't return to normal, how do I know if I've gotten rid of the mites?

Can anybody post a photo of scaly leg mite infestation for me? Do birds with feathered feet have scalier looking legs anyway? What if my bird has NO scales at all, just flakey skin?
