Leg twitching anyone???

Be careful about blaming it on a niacin deficiency. You have eight ducks total eating the same diet. It seems odd that only one is having problems.

The whole "hot food" thing is an old wives tale.

As for one duck being effected and not the other, this really doesn't surprise me all that much. In people you can have a family all on the same basic diet and one kid ends up obese while the rest are skinny.

I'm not certain it's niacin. I hope it is, because that's an easy thing to fix. But the fact that it's only one duck doesn't mean much--according to Holderread (and others), nutritional deficiencies (in particular, niacin) are often symptomatic in only a few ducks. Hopefully the niacin will help. If not, the OP will have to try something different.

Le Canard--do you have other suggestions for possibilities?

Both my brother and nephew are large animal veterinarians, Cornell and U Penn trained respectively. They would realize there was not enough information given to make a determination.

To have someone treat an illness as a vitamin deficiency when it could be more serious is poor practice.

Well I appreciate everyones help. I came here for advice and I got it. I took their corn from them these last few days and they weren't all that happy about it the first day. They decided they didn't want anything at all. Yesterday and today they started eating their pellets along with the cat food and not goat food too. They sure can be difficult. I was watching that drake today and I didn't see it leg twitching. I am going to do the brewers yeast thing anyways because it sounds like a good idea to cover my bases! Thanks again everyone!

Many of us don't take our poultry to vets since the costs for avian vets is out of this world. All we can do is go down a list of things it might be, which is what people come here for. The advice that was given wouldn't make anything worse, and could very likely help.

that is very true...thank you!

Hey, that's great that the twitching is gone! Maybe it was just a passing thing. The brewer's yeast sure won't hurt, though, and I have noticed that twitching can come and go--one of my recent small batches of ducklings had twitching legs. Shame on me, I had not been adding niacin to the water (too lazy). I didn't start adding right away, because I got busy, and I noticed the twitching go away--and then come back. Once I started the niacin it got better and is fine now.

Sorry they were so upset about the corn, but I bet you're going to have much better luck nutrition-wise now. If they were that attached to it, they probably weren't eating enough of the health food. Maybe you could give them corn as a small, occasional treat--once they've recovered from their withdrawal symptoms, that is!

Only here do I read that corn is a hot food, that creates an exothermic reation in the gut as it is being digested. What crap!!!!

The advice given here has killed many, many a duck. You just haven't been around that long to see it.
