Legal Advice/Worker's Rights

But I'm sure that he is being paid evertime for every hour over 40, right? If he's not, if it's a salary, then check that his salary is at least what minimum wage, plus time and a half for every hour over 40 equals, or he may have a leg to stand on there. Have him keep up with is hours not just on a time card, but for his own records, too. What state are you in?
 
Hey Fuzzie, one thing our first security job fresh out of college taught us is that we don't want to work on salary personally! Had to see our awesome supervisor (ex cop, good ol' southern boy) go through that song and dance and just get worn down by it. Now I'm watching my current supervisor (also a great one) go through it. So yes on OT, which is great for extra cash, but not great for long term classes.

Unfortunately, it looks like everything is legal...including them cutting into his class time after saying they wouldn't. Will know to get that in writing next time. Argh, he's going to talk to his teacher as he can only miss so many classes before they boot someone from the program, and if nothing comes of that, he'll just have to quit this job. His classes just have to come first as they provide long term security over short term. Not a life-breaking deal for us, but poor other people. I know this has really messed up a few of them, due to classes or other obligations.

One thing I can't figure out though is that my workplace always makes a huge deal about how we have to take at least a 30 min lunch break (unpaid...I'd personally rather not take it since I only have to get through 4 tens), and stresses we need to take our 15 minute breaks or they will 'get in trouble'. I can't figure out who requires it, as the university website states:

14. Does my department have to give me lunch and breaks?


I guess just the University gets on them about it then...? Will have to ask when I see someone next.
